Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Per fess Gules and Argent, on a stylized shovel blade point down counterchanged a bezant.  Attached below and to the sides of the shield a Gold scroll inscribed QUAM MAXIMIS ITINERIBUS in Black letters.

Symbolism
The colors scarlet and white are for the Corps of Engineers. The conventionalized shovel charged with the gold coin represents both engineering functions and the gold mining which is the principle wealth producing activity of South Dakota, home area of the organization.  The motto translates to With The Utmost Possible Speed.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 16 March 1959.

That for the regiments and separate battalions of the South Dakota Army National Guard:  On a wreath of the colors Argent and Gules, a coyote statant Proper.
